Right now I have about seven scenes of Saiunkoku that I need to edit before I can put on the blog, and I have two translations in progress. >_>
There are a few more scenes I want to translate, but I’ve gotten most of the ones I want to do out of the way.
The next Saiunkoku novel is coming out in May, so there’s a long time to wait.
I think after this I’ll translate some scenes from Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and maybe try my hand at some manga. LoGH would be mostly a self-indulgent project for me, because so few people watch the anime these days. I should try reading something more substantial than light novels or space opera, but oh well. I’m also thinking of reading the Irresponsible Captain Taylor novels, or maybe Crest of the Stars, speaking of space opera.
I just wish I knew more about Japanese fantasy novels other than Twelve Kingdoms.

I have the 3 Crest of the Stars novel from tokyopop.
They are an Correct SF reading compared to the current SF standard.
- Bildungsgeschichte : both main characters are around the +17 years old.
- Culture discovery/clash ? : The Human hero Jinto is forced to integrate the Abh culture which has it’s own language, cultural references & social interaction protocol.
Somewhat loosely similar to C. J. Cherryh Foreigner series, especially for book 1 of the crest of stars.
- Space Opera old school : Galactic warfare, with big ship battle and the like.
- Bit a nerd boy stuff : Hell the abh females are all very nose bleeding hot. The author was still a student when he “meet/discovered” Lafiel the heroine of the story that explains her very attractive features.

Yeah, I saw all of the anime, so I know what it’s like.

Charmian, thanks very much for taking the time to translate, and post the summaries of Saiunkoku.
I really like the story, I think is more about friendship than love, or the many ways you can love someone, and the loyalty to family and friends.
I like the political part of it, those hidden agendas, would make Niccolo Machiavelli envious.
Please keep with the good work,
Thanks again

I’d like to see excerpts from the Crest of the Stars novels.
Can’t help with Japanese fantasy novels, but these are these are the fandoms I’m in that are based on light novels:
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
12 Kingdoms
Ghost Hunt (lighthearted paranormal investigation — is a fan)
Sentai Yousei Yukikaze & Mirage of Blaze (through )
Mainichi Seiten! (through — BL about four brothers who end up with other people)
Baccano! (immortal mafia and crazed serial killers in 1920s NYC — some novels translated by )

Oops, just realized that LJ code won’t work here.
milchstrasse is a fan of Ghost Hunt
petronia is my window into Yukikaze and Mirage of Blaze
canis_m got me into Mainichi Seiten
LJ’s baccano comm has translated some of the novels.

I don’t really want to read books that I can watch the anime of, though… It seems to make more sense to read it if I have no other ways of getting the story.

Mainichi Seitan doesn’t have an anime!
…Not that I think that you are likely to want to translate this either, just, as long as you were bringing up the topic, I thought I’d try my luck. XD

Not really into romance though… Right now I am reading, off and on, a BL novel, though, Iya na Yatsu, that Insaneneko posted about.
