Once again, I think the culprit is wanting to draw things out. I can’t recall if I translated that part or not (you have seen the list someone compiled of all the translations, right?)

I actually don’t really agree completely. If you read the scene where he refused, Ruka explicitly told him that there were more qualified candidates, so there is no need for him to “honor his birthright,” especially as in Saiunkoku all candidates for the throne need to be qualified by birth anyhow. Therefore, I don’t think Ryuuki is obligated to be king because of duty towards his father or something (and frankly, knowing Senka’s personality, I’ll just this once praise Senka by saying that I don’t think Senka would want Ryuuki to be king if he wasn’t going to give it his all. This is the dude who told Ou Ki that if he didn’t like Senka’s rule, that he should try and take the throne from him.)

Ou Ki? You mean Kouki, right? And lol, Saiunkoku is full of plot devices. XD

I’m not really interested in Shoujo too much but I’ll try your recommendations. I’m more partial to fantasy-type stories with a solid storyline.

So, I saw that you guys raised a good point over at Mangafox that Ryuuki never stated why he wanted to be king. That’s another failing, I think, of the author’s. At a pivotal moment like that, we should have at least been acquainted with his reasoning. However, I’ve always assumed that because he felt bad about “running away,” he must have felt some sense of duty towards his crown. After all, regardless that he’s the last, he was really born to be an heir to the throne and I think in cases like these, there’s an inherent obligation within the person to honor his birthright whether he wants it or not. Okay, that’s just my take on it and I really think the author should have elucidated his change of heart.

Yuushun. Now I understand what you’re saying about “dark” fate but I really hope he doesn’t die. I do like him. And that new information about Ou Ki seems so….erm…or feels like such a “plot device.”

Speaking of Bara-hime and the weather, I have some interesting information for you. In Chinese folklore, there is a “heavenly court” up above, ruled by 玉皇大帝(Jade Emperor?), with all sorts of 仙 as his subjects. Among them, there are four who’re called 雨师，风伯，雷公，电母。So Bara-hime is the combination of thunder and lightning, hahaha.
